Beauty and the Beast

Today’s adventures took the boys and girls in different directions.  My husband took his brother and son mountain biking for the first time on single track trails (a part of me wanted to be on that trip).  The girls (my sister-in-law and two nieces) played at the park, ate lunch at a favorite local restaurant and went to see Beauty and the Beast.

I would have to say that I enjoyed the movie, Emma Watson was the kind of girl I like to see in movies for little girls (strong, loves to read, and compassionate).  However, I have to say at the end I wondered why the Beast had to turn back into a prince?  She fell in love with the beast so why couldn’t they be together like they were?  I know the message is about how the inside of a person is what counts and not the outside, but what would happen if the movie ended differently?

As an adult and working with girls with Girls on the Run, I think I am just more aware of how much we put girls in the girl box. It makes it tougher to just enjoy a movie, book or TV show, but the messages we send are important for who we become.

  1. That is an interesting thought. It’s funny how differently we see things as we grow older. I’m sure I will be thinking about your question when we go to see the movie, and the play version at our local high school this week.

  2. I’ve been so excited about Emma Watson in the HP movies, and I know that this movie has been praised, but would like to see fewer remakes and more new stories that don’t dwell on the same old love stories. I agree.
